Blessings on the Menorah Third Night
Tonight is the third night of Chanukah where Jewish People are lighting three candles and saying the traditional blessings. Gifts will be opened, fatty foods will be eaten and perhaps a game of dreidel will be played. Messianic Jews are also celebrating this amazing miracle of one night’s oil lasting eight days back in Israel’s history. God is a God of provision. He provides for us daily and He has provided Yeshua as our Redeemer and Messiah. During Chanukah, along with the miracle in Israel’s history, Messianic Jews celebrate God’s miraculous provision of Yeshua!
Tonight, three candles are placed in the holders on the right side of the Chanukiah, and lit from left to right, using the Servant Candle in the middle. As we light the Chanukah lights, we give thanks for the many ways God provides for us.
Before kindling the Chanukah lights on the first night of Chanukah, (or if you’re kindling the Chanukah lights for the first time this year) recite all three blessings. On every subsequent night only the first two are recited.
Recited only on the first night (or the first time lighting this Chanukah):
1. Ba-ruch A-tah Ado-nai E-lo-he-nu Me-lech ha-olam a-sher ki-de-sha-nu be-mitz-vo-tav ve-tzi-va-nu le-had-lik ner Cha-nu-kah.
2. Ba-ruch A-tah Ado-nai E-lo-he-nu Me-lech Ha-olam she-a-sa ni-sim la-avo-te-nu ba-ya-mim ha-hem bi-zman ha-zeh.
3. Ba-ruch A-tah Ado-nai E-lo-he-nu Me-lech Ha-olam she-heche-ya-nu ve-ki-yi-ma-nu ve-higi-a-nu liz-man ha-zeh.
1. Blessed are You, Lord our G-d, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments, and commanded us to kindle the Chanukah light.
2. Blessed are You, Lord our G-d, King of the universe, who performed miracles for our forefathers in those days, at this time.
3. Blessed are You, Lord our G-d, King of the universe, who has granted us life, sustained us, and enabled us to reach this occasion.
“Sing to the Lord with thanksgiving….Who covers the heavens with clouds, who provides rain for the earth, who makes grass to grow on the mountains.” Psalm 147:7-8
“Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed them, and broke them, and kept giving them to the disciples to set before thepeople. And they all ate and were satisfied; and the broken pieces which they had left over were picked up, twelve baskets full.” ¾Luke 9:16-17
Yeshua, You provided in miraculous ways while You were here on earth. Just like the Chanukah oil stretching far beyond what was possible, You did the impossible by making five loaves and two fish feed over 5,000 people!
“Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.” ¾ Matthew 11:28
Yeshua, our Prince of Peace, You provide rest for our spirits. Without You, we cannot know the peace and rest of standing in right relationship with God the Father. Your love and compassion give rest to our weary and heavy-laden souls. All other earthly “rest” is incomplete and fleeting. You alone can provide complete and lasting rest. Thank You.
LORD, we thank You for being a God of provision. We need You. We need Your provision. Thank You for meeting both our physical needs and the needs of our souls. Our hearts can get burdened with anxious thoughts pertaining to our needs and the insecurities of this world. Teach us to moment-by-moment seek, find, and experience real rest in You.
Scripture Readings & Prayer
“that the Messiah would suffer and, as the first to rise from the dead, would bring the message of light to his own people and to the Gentiles” (Acts 26:23).
Yeshua, You willingly suffered and died to save us from our irreconcilable sin. Thank You! Thank You for Your power over sin and the sufficiency of Your payment on our behalf. Thank You for Your resurrection as mighty evidence.
“For God, who said, “Light shall shine out of darkness,” is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Messiah” 2 Corinthians 4:6.
LORD God as You provided sufficiency of oil and light for the Temple rededication, You also provide the sufficiency of righteousness through Your Son, Yeshua HaMashiach. Yeshua, as we light the candles of Chanukah the light shines around us and reminds us that by Your light You show us the glory of the Father. In You we see Him. Without You we could not know the Father or enter into His presence as acceptable and sufficient. Thank You for showing us the Father and for giving us knowledge of Him, access to Him, and the experience of His love.
