Blessings on the Menorah Sixth Night
“Remember the wonders He has done…” —1 Chronicles 16:12
On this sixth night of Chanukah, we remember a great miracle that God performed in the history of Israel. A one day’s supply of lamp oil burned in the menorah of the newly rededicated Temple for eight days until more pure and sanctified oil could be made. This is why Chanukah is also called the Festival of Lights and the Festival of Dedication.
Tonight, candles fill six holders, from right to left, of the Chanukah lampstand. The Servant Candle in the center is used to light them from left to right, the newest first. We recite the Chanukah blessings and, as Messianic Jews, we celebrate both the miracle of light and the Light of the World, Yeshua.
We are reminded of the great miracle and amazing gift that Yeshua is – the Light of the World given to us so that we might come into a right relationship with God.
Before kindling the Chanukah lights on the first night of Chanukah, Tuesday December 16, 2014, (or if you’re kindling the Chanukah lights for the first time this year) recite all three blessings. On every subsequent night only the first two are recited.
Recited only on the first night (or the first time lighting this Chanukah):
1. Ba-ruch A-tah Ado-nai E-lo-he-nu Me-lech ha-olam a-sher ki-de-sha-nu be-mitz-vo-tav ve-tzi-va-nu le-had-lik ner Cha-nu-kah.
2. Ba-ruch A-tah Ado-nai E-lo-he-nu Me-lech Ha-olam she-a-sa ni-sim la-avo-te-nu ba-ya-mim ha-hem bi-zman ha-zeh.
3. Ba-ruch A-tah Ado-nai E-lo-he-nu Me-lech Ha-olam she-heche-ya-nu ve-ki-yi-ma-nu ve-higi-a-nu liz-man ha-zeh.
1. Blessed are You, Lord our G-d, King of the universe, who has sanctified us with His commandments, and commanded us to kindle the Chanukah light.
2. Blessed are You, Lord our G-d, King of the universe, who performed miracles for our forefathers in those days, at this time.
3. Blessed are You, Lord our G-d, King of the universe, who has granted us life, sustained us, and enabled us to reach this occasion.
God is Light!
“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the defense of my life; whom shall I dread?” —Psalm 27:1
God, You are faithful. Your perfect love frees us from fear and makes us to know that You are our light, our salvation and defense.
“This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all” —1 John 1:5
God, Your holiness and purity are so bright that You, in fact, are light! Thank You that there is no darkness in You. Thank You for Your light!
“Lord Jesus Messiah . . . who alone possesses immortality and dwells in unapproachable light.” —1 Timothy 6:14-16
Yeshua, we can’t even imagine the full intensity of Your light. Someday, as Your Word promises, we will see You. We will know the clarity and purity of Your light.
LORD, may we know Your light and love more deeply, and trust You always as our defense. May Your perfect light chase darkness from the corners of our lives that we may live freely in Your light. Lord, we wait eagerly for the day when we will see Your brightness and the full beauty of Your light. Thank You!
Scripture Readings & Prayer
“But all things become visible when they are exposed by the light, for everything that becomes visible is light.” – Ephesians 5:13
“Even the darkness is not dark to You, and the night is as bright as the day. Darkness and light are alike to You.” – Psalm 139:12
Thank You! You, O LORD, are diligent to shine Your light into our lives, into the still-dark corners and crevices. It is a good gift that You do this. Replace our resistance and fear with gratefulness and trust. Fill us with Your light and drive out the darkness of our sin-prone old natures. Let us not cling to the darkness but cling to the Light. We dedicate ourselves the pursuit of trusting You more with the daily process of Your good gift of transforming us into the image of Your Son.
